New Direct Route Connects Esbjerg and Groningen as North Sea Network Expands

On Tuesday, Esbjerg Airport and LYGG launched a new direct route between Esbjerg and Groningen Airport Eelde, creating a direct connection between two of the North Sea region’s key offshore, energy and maritime hubs.

The launch was marked with an event at Esbjerg Airport, attended by Jesper Frost Rasmussen, Mayor of Esbjerg, alongside representatives from Esbjerg City Council and regional business and industry associations.

-The connection between Esbjerg and Groningen has been built around the needs of our local companies. It fits the rhythm of an industry where plans change, time is valuable and practical access matters. This is a smart route with a clear purpose; Esbjerg and Groningen both have strong positions in the energy sector. We share a close connection to the North Sea. That is exactly what this new route is built for, Jesper Frost Rasmussen, Mayor of Esbjerg said in his opening speech.

The connection is designed around the recurring travel needs of companies working across the offshore and energy sectors in both regions, reflecting close ties between Western Denmark’s and the Northern Netherlands’ industrial and maritime economies.

-The new route makes it easier for companies and employees to travel between two key energy regions in the North Sea. A direct connection to Groningen removes a significant travel challenge for many of the companies working across these markets. This is exactly the type of connection we want to create more of,  says Allan Dahl Leiberg, Acting Airport Director at Esbjerg Airport.

-Every connection we introduce creates the foundation for the next one. That’s how we are building the North Sea network: step by step, together with the companies using it, says Roope Kekäläinen, founder of LYGG.

The published North Sea schedule grows alongside verified recurring business travel demand, with additional frequencies and regional connections introduced as demand grows.

Aircraft Based in Esbjerg Supports Continued Growth

With an aircraft based in Esbjerg, LYGG has greater flexibility to support both scheduled services and company-specifictravel needs across the North Sea Region.

-A permanently based aircraft gives us more flexibility to support both scheduled and ad hoc travel needs from Esbjerg – that’s a valuable addition for the airport,  says Leiberg.

For LYGG, both the new route and the aircraft based in Esbjerg represent important building blocks in the continued development of its North Sea network.

-The network is never finished. Every company travelling with LYGG helps strengthen existing connections or creates opportunities to introduce new ones. In some cases, tailored operations become the first step towards a scheduled connection. We believe regional connectivity should develop around real travel needs, continues Kekäläinen.
