Can the offshore sector be “green?”
Esbjerg Airport is attempting to investigate this in an EU Interreg project that will run over the next four years.
Esbjerg Airport is the lead partner in the project, which is designed to meet the specific wishes and goals set out in the Esbjerg and Ostend Declarations.
In the two declarations, nine European countries have committed to working toward the goal of expanding North Sea activity to build 134 gigawatts of offshore wind power by 2030 and more than 300 gigawatts by 2050.
DIOL – Develop Innovative Offshore Logistics
Esbjerg Airport has joined forces with Esbjerg Port and ten other international companies, ports, airports, and universities to collaborate on the EU project DIOL.
The project aims to improve efficiency and sustainability in the offshore sector within offshore wind energy, oil, and gas, thereby turning the North Sea into Europe’s green power plant.
To achieve the goal of developing the North Sea into Europe’s green power plant, the partners have proposed nine pilot projects, which they will investigate over the four-year project period.
- Intelligent offshore drone transport
- Renewable energy for equipping logistics hubs
- Intelligent manned/unmanned use of airspace
- Intelligent environmental data management in logistics centers
- Adaptation of logistics centers to supply future energy islands
- Intelligent monitoring of logistics centers/renewable energy infrastructure
- Storage of environmentally friendly fuels in logistics centres
- Offshore storage for floating wind turbines
The project will be completed in 2027 and is funded by the EU’s Interreg programme, which supports transnational cooperation projects that work to tackle common challenges and promote regional development.
