International collaborations
Six of Europe’s largest helicopter airports, Esbjerg Airport, Den Helder Airport, Emden Airport, Stavanger Airport, Humberside Airport, and Aberdeen Airport, are collaborating on offshore helicopter operations for the large offshore wind farms.
The collaboration has been named NSHA, which stands for North Sea Heliport Association.
The goal of the collaboration is:
Deliver efficient and secure operations
- Share operational best practices to ensure the highest level of safety and efficiency
- Facilitate the transport of passengers and cargo between member airports.
Developing sustainable aviation at our airports
- Establish procedures for making airport operations CO2 neutral.
- Prioritize the development of sustainable scheduled traffic and helicopter operations.
Accelerate the digitization of airport operations
- Improve data production, sharing, and implementation for offshore operations in the North Sea.
- Develop drone operations for the offshore sector.
Esbjerg Airport as Host Nation airport
In August 2022, more than 450 American soldiers and 44 military helicopters arrived at Esbjerg Airport as part of Host Nation Support.
The purpose of the exercise was to train the defense forces in how to effectively transport military personnel and equipment from the US and other allies to the Baltic Sea region and the Baltic States in wartime situations.
With its experience in helicopter flights, the necessary facilities, and security preparedness, Esbjerg Airport thus has the capacity to handle large international operations in the future.
In this way, the airport contributes to both Danish and European security and to the military mobility that the EU currently demands.
